What is SEO for a small business?
SEO — search engine optimisation — is making your website the most obviously useful answer to a search your customers are already typing. For a small business it comes down to three things: choosing searches you can realistically win, making the matching page unmistakably about that search, and removing the technical problems that stop Google reading it.
The version of SEO sold to enterprises — content teams, link budgets, six-figure retainers — is not the version that works here. A plumber in one city and a five-location dental group do not need the same thing, and neither needs most of what a large brand does. What follows is the small-business version: five steps, in order, each one worth doing even if you never get to the next.
